General Kashrus Policy on:

Toothpaste

Back to Policies

There is a difference of Rabbinic opinion whether toothpaste and mouthwash are considered "edible". Rav Schwartz zt"l ruled that as a general rule we should assume that they are not edible; therefore all varieties are acceptable. There is a preference to use a kosher variety, and we list those brands which are known to not contain non-kosher ingredients. However, for Pesach, Rav Schwartz said that we should be particular to follow the stricter opinion, and, therefore, the only toothpastes and mouthwashes recommended for Pesach are those which are certified as kosher for Pesach or are known not to contain any chametz. ingredients.
