General Kashrus Policy on:

Insects

Back to Policies

Insects are forbidden and may not be consumed whether they are large or small, fresh or frozen, alive or dead. cRc and other kosher agencies expend considerable time and effort to determine which vegetables are infested and how the insects can be removed from them before the food is consumed. Major decisions, such as which insects are so tiny that halacha treats them as "invisible", are decided by the Av Beis Din, and cRc professional staff applies those decisions to the many fruits and vegetables on supermarket shelves. cRc Kosher provides guidance in this area through in-person training and written guidelines available on the cRc website and apps. As would be expected, cRc-certified products follow these same guidelines.
