Q. I saw someplace that "most lipstick contains fish scales" what does this mean?


A. That is referring to pearl essence (or pearlescence), a substance extracted from (kosher) herring scales. It provides the shine to herring and serves the same function in certain cosmetics. It doesn't pose a kashrus concern.
