Apricot with Spots

Q: I’ve noticed that the dried apricots which I buy often have white or brown spots on them. Are these bugs? They don’t look at all like bugs but what else could they be?

A: Our expert on insect infestation, Rabbi Yaakov M. Eisenbach, checked the spots and confirmed that they are not any form of insect. After researching the issue further, he believes that what you are seeing is a fungal growth which is common in dried apricots. [For more on the fungus please see]
