General Kashrus Policies

General Kashrus Policy on:

Mouthwash

Back to Policies

There is a difference of Rabbinic opinion whether mouthwash and toothpaste are considered "edible". Rav Schwartz zt"l ruled that as a general rule we should assume that they are not edible, and, therefore, all varieties are acceptable. There is a preference to use a kosher variety, and we list those brands which are known to not contain non-kosher ingredients. However, for Pesach, Rav Schwartz said that we should be particular to follow the stricter opinion; therefore the only toothpastes and mouthwash recommended for Pesach are those which are certified as kosher for Pesach or are known not to contain any chametz. ingredients.
